Inside Bigscreen Beyond 2: The Teardown

Inside Bigscreen Beyond 2: The Teardown

We’re excited to give you an inside look at the engineering behind Bigscreen Beyond 2 — the world’s lightest PC VR headset, now weighing just 107 grams.

Give it a watch — in the teardown video, Darshan (our CEO and founder) and David (electrical engineer) break down all the technical details and design decisions behind Beyond 2. You'll see how it compares to Beyond 1, what we’ve improved, and the innovations that make Beyond 2 a true generational leap.

Teardown Highlights

For more in-depth insights, watch the full teardown video above. Below are some key highlights and takeaways from the teardown:

Redesigned Optics & Pancake Lenses

Beyond 2’s new custom pancake lens delivers a 116° diagonal field of view with dramatically improved edge-to-edge clarity. You’ll notice reduced chromatic aberration, minimal ghost images, and higher brightness—all packed into a smaller, lighter optical stack.

Precision Adjustable IPD

Beyond 2 features adjustable IPD, enabling you to finely adjust the position of each lens to align with your eyes. The teardown shows how the mechanism works to enable each optical module to slide independently.

SteamVR Tracking Flex Assembly

The teardown shows off the Tracking Flex, a PCB with photodiodes for SteamVR tracking and the studio-grade microphone array.

Improved connectors, antennas, and EMI shielding

Beyond 2 has more robust metal-encased connectors with improved EMI shielding. The Beyond has 2 radio antennas for controller tracking. In Beyond 2, these antennas are now synchronized which prevents signal interference and enables flawless SteamVR controller tracking performance.

Eyetracking Module

The teardown reveals the world's smallest eyetracking image sensor inside the Beyond 2e eyetracking module. The sensor is the size of a grain of sand and is pictured as a tiny white dot in the image above. The eyetracking flex has two wings with infrared LEDs on each side.

 What's Next

In the coming weeks, we plan to drop several big updates.

First, we'll have a new Production Update next week with the latest details on mass production and shipping. The first production devices have arrived in Los Angeles on June 2nd. We know thousands of you are waiting for your Beyonds. The good news is we're thrilled to start shipping Beyond 2 in the next couple of weeks. In the first couple of weeks, you'll see headsets shipping slowly.

In the subsequent weeks, headsets will ship in larger volumes as we ramp up production and quality control processes. We know it can be agonizing to watch the first people receive their Beyond 2s while you're waiting for your own device; rest assured, you'll be getting your incredible Beyond 2 in your hands soon enough!

Second, we'll have an Eyetracking Update with details on how eyetracking works today, how to participate in beta testing, and what to expect from Beyond 2e eyetracking in the future as we continue R&D on advanced features.

Third, we have a new product partnership to announce – more on this soon!

If you haven't preorder your Bigscreen Beyond 2 yet, you can order now on our website today. New orders placed today are expected to ship in 2-3 months as we ramp up shipping and have a significant backlog of preorders to ship first!
